In most, if not all cases, insomnia is the result of a psychological condition. If you are suffering from insomnia, medication along with psychological help may be required.
A lot of people suffering from insomnia rely on sleeping pills such as Zopiclone tablets and other sedatives to achieve a restful night of sleep. If sedatives are taken for prolonged periods of time, people have a tendency to become psychologically dependent on them, as they begin to believe that without the medication they would not be able to sleep.
Nowadays, certain medication such as benzodiazepines and some of the latest non-benzodiazepines can result in physical dependence that results in severe withdrawal symptoms, especially if the medication isn’t reduced gradually. A systematic comparison of both groups of medication found that they have similar efficiency in treating the issue, and are slightly more effective than antidepressants. However, benzodiazepines have more of a tendency to cause adverse reactions compared to non-benzodiazepines.
The most common hypnotics used to treat insomnia are benzodiazepines, as they unselectively bind to GABA receptors. Drugs under these categories include but aren’t limited to diazepam, midazolam, and flurazepam. The medication tends to be highly addictive, especially if taken for prolonged periods of time.
Non-benzodiazepine prescription medication includes zopiclone and zolpidem, and are selective when binding to GABA receptors and have far fewer side effects than most benzodiazepines. Considered to be superior to benzodiazepines, zopiclone doesn’t cause psychological or physical dependence, or cognitive or memory disturbances.
Therefore, non-benzodiazepines such as zopiclone tablets are much more effective in treating the symptoms of insomnia. It is far more effective than other medication that can be prescribed such as trazodone, mirtazapine and doxepin. These drugs have a sedating affect that most people don’t want to suffer in the morning. That is perhaps the best feature of non-benzodiazepine medication when treating insomnia.
